The company’s first self-service coin-counting kiosks were installed in 1992 in the San Francisco area and today Coinstar is the industry leader operating the only multi-national, fully automated network of self-service coin-counting kiosks across the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Coinstar kiosks are found in nearly every neighborhood -- over 20,200 convenient locations in all, making life easier for consumers and driving traffic to produce incremental revenue for our retailers.
It is estimated that at any one time, there is approximately $10 billion worth of coin sitting idle in U.S. households. Our kiosks process about 50 billion coins a year or approximately $3 billion. Consumers convert coins to cash by paying a nominal fee or receive free coin-counting when they choose to turn their coin in for a gift card from national retail brands.
